As Memorial Day comes and goes, I would like to remember Second Lieutenant Bernard Silbowitz, who died in action over Crete in 1942. Bernard (1917-1942) was son of Abba Zeev and Jennie Silbowitz. Abba Zeev in turn was son of Chaim Gedalia Zelbovich of Grodno.

As a very young girls, my friend and distant cousin Laurie Caspe remembers Bernard coming to her uncle’s home and scrap metal business in Hutchinson, Kansas in his military uniform.
