ב”ה

Eve of the Holy Sabbath, 5th of Adat Bet 5700 (Friday March 15th, 1940)

To my dear cousin Gershon,

You will surely forgive me that I’m just answering you now after a long delay, for I actually received your letter two months ago. And many thanks to you specially. I was very pleased to read in your letter that thank god you are doing your work with diligence and that you are learning gemarah and Torah and also other subjects. But don’t devote yourself too much to this (because you have to), That is, to the other subjects [external secular? subjects], because all your efforts should be directed toward Torah and the purpose of the general studies is just to make an axe with which to dig [a Hebrew expression]. Just as you’ve written that you’ve undergone changes in your life, I’m writing you that in my life there were even greater changes. I, thank god, got married to a learned woman, a very religious one, of good family with yichus [like pedigree for a dog!], in short with all the good attributes. The wedding took place this year on the 5th of Kislev that is four months have passed already and then it was also erev shabbos. You will certainly forgive me for I think I did not send you an invitation. And even if you are angry, please forgive me for this. I am now in the city of Daugopolis that was previously known as Dvinsk. Ask your respected mother, may she live long years, she will certainly know. Here I am working in a school as a religious teacher teaching Bible that is to say…

And if there were peace in the country then I wouldn’t have anything to complain about. My wife, may she live long years, also earns a bit, gives private lessons and that’s how we, thank god, live a life of pleasure. In general in our land and in the area there is peace, that is to say but in the world and along our borders you must know what is happening. The general war affects us greatly but we hope god willing that all the calamities will cease and we will return to a life of peace and quiet.

As you see I wrote and described for you the state my life is in, but at this moment I am learning in a few different groups (?). Now please write about yourself. Firstly how are you and how are your parents and where are they now. And maybe write me how and why you left Toronto. Please write me whether you receive letters from your parents and how are they. If it would be easy for you I would like to ask of you, as you know that I and you have very rich cousins in America among them my rich Uncle Reb Haim Yosef who certainly lives in Boston. Write your mother especially and ask her in my name that she should do what she can to try to purchase tickets for us so that I and my wife can travel [to America] because here in our country whomever has an opportunity leaves our country. Certainly you are aware of the fact that very soon they will bring our great Lubavitcher rabbi and his family to America and also Mr. Chatzkov, may he live long, and other famous people. Therefore I ask you to try to do this favor for me. I will god willing return the favour to you and will pay you what you’re due god willing. Go in peace, succeed in your studies and rise one step at a time and be god fearing and studious and dwell in the ”tent of Torah”. I want to know about your parents may they live long years and personally wish them the best. Regards from my wife may she live long years. Regards from my mother may she live long years.

Your cousin who looks forward to your letter and who is asking a favor

In worldliness and spirituality Shraga Yitzhak

According to my mother’s request mayk she live long years please write her address as
